Andrew Sutherland has previously been employed as a school teacher (briefly), a public servant (contract not renewed), an insurance consultant (sacked), Telstra employee (let go), a toga-wearing barman in a theatre restaurant, and an Australian Rules footballer (Collingwood and Oakleigh). After being told by his Telstra boss: “Sutherland, you’re fired… and promise me you won’t get another office job, I’m afraid you’re not suited”, he went and got a job at Borders until he became a full-time father, his current position. He’s hoping to be retrenched soon.

It’s about that hat worn by Alain Delon in Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 masterpiece Le Samourai.
It can be seen on the header of this blog. A beautiful hat on the head of a killer.
Its colour is the grey-blue that infuses Melville’s greatest films.
And apparently I’m not the only one who likes it: -
“Hello folks, this is my first post here, hopefully you guys can help me out. I will post a few pictures of the hat and post a link to the hat that is closest, but I hope to find one that is even closer. The thing that is hanging me up is the thick band, the color, and the peculiar crown, which is not exactly a teardrop or a diamond. I can’t find any images of the crown, so hopefully one of you guys remembers!”
I too searched for the hat – through the narrow laneways of Melbourne. Finally, after discovering an obscure shop, I bought my killer’s fedora. After arriving at home I realised I’d made a mistake – the hat was black, the crown was the wrong shape and its brim too wide: looking at me in the mirror was Rabbi Pinkelbaum , not Jef Costello the cool French assassin.
Now I’m not sure this brilliant hat - a cinematic icon- ever existed. Perhaps it was a case of an ordinary hat being transformed by Delon’s striking features and Melville’s visual genius.
